The Situation

Young athletes dreamed of professional sports and saw no other way into an industry full of other careers. Students, families, and the industry all had interest. The connection wasn't there.

What GLUE Did

Co-founded with Lamont McKim, J. Darrel Barros, and Leslie Wise-Scoggins, the Society convened “Breaking the Mold” on April 22, 1995: high school and college athletes and their parents alongside speakers from the NBA, NFL, Turner Broadcasting, CNN, Nike, IMG, USA Basketball, Smith Barney, the Atlanta Olympic Committee, and others, with three University of Michigan units as co-sponsors.

The Evidence

University of Michigan News release, April 7, 1995 (link to news.umich.edu). The Society ran for a couple of years, built a lasting network, and several participants found employment through it.

The Lesson

“The interest existed. The connection didn't. That is the gap GLUE closes.”
