Black Men Organizing (BMO)

A fast-growing mobilization of over men across Milwaukee, committed to brotherhood, organizing for power, and building for action.

What we do

This initiative engages and mobilizes Black men in civic action, fostering leadership and unity within Milwaukee. Through advocacy, community forums, and events like the Unity March and Rally, we empower Black men to drive positive change and create stronger communities.

The Impact

Guided by our values of Brotherhood, Organization, and Action, Black Men Organizing is a mobilization of over 400 men across Milwaukee committed to collective power, leadership, and advocacy.

Committees & Accomplishments

BMO operates through four functioning committees that channel the energy and talents of our members:

  • Financial literacy workshops and coaching for families.

  • Entrepreneurship support to grow Black-owned businesses.

  • Collective conversations about community wealth-building and cooperative economics.

Black Wealth & Economics

  • Supported co-chair Darryl Jackson in sponsoring a Milwaukee Public School Board resolution affirming support for Black students.

  • Co-programming monthly intergenerational events with Running Rebels.

  • Advancing initiatives to increase representation of Black male educators.

Black Youth & Education

  • Collaborated with local health leaders and organizations to amplify access and awareness.

  • Supported public events such as the Men’s Health 5K Walk/Run to raise visibility and promote wellness in the community.

Men’s Health & Mental Wellness

Brotherhood, Organizing & Action

  • Facilitated four successful mediation sessions at the request of members.

  • Advocated on behalf of a member’s relative in relation to treatment within the criminal justice system.

  • Mobilized members around the closing of the Social Development Commission, raising community concerns and pushing for accountability.

  • Coordinated BMO’s presence at citywide unity events and marches.

Additional Impact

  • Interview series: Hosted on LinkedIn and Facebook, highlighting the diverse skills, talents, interests, and abilities of our members.

  • Intergenerational programming: Ongoing monthly collaborations with Running Rebels to strengthen ties across generations.

  • Weekly e-blasts: Regular updates to over 400 men in the database to share opportunities, highlight community news, and sustain engagement.

  • Strategic Advocacy: Amplifying community voices in education, health, criminal justice, and economic development to ensure systemic change.
